Short But Sweet!

Last Saturday, Robert Plant and The Band of Joy delivered an hour and a half show that drew heavily from the Band of Joy CD as well as the Led Zeppelin catalog. I highly recommend this show. Plant and his band won the audience over from the very beginning when they walked on stage and launched right into Black Dog. I was pleasantly surprised that some of the Zeppelin songs the band performed were not the obvious hits, but rather some of the lesser heard Zeppelin songs, including Black Country Woman and That's The Way. These and the other Zeppelin songs fit in very well the Band of Joy songs. Approximately half the songs from the Band of Joy CD were included in the set, and seemed to really connect with the audience. This is by no means a greatest hits tour, which works to Plant's advantage. Everything sounded new, fresh, and very positive. Another pleasant surprise was a reworking of In The Mood from Plant's 1983 solo album, The Principle of Moments. One song (Please Read The Letter) from the Grammy-winning Raising Sand CD was included - Beautiful! Technically, this is a very good band, with great musicianship, beautiful harmonies, and a really good groove. Plant himself was in very good form, with his voice sounding very strong and clear. The rock, blues, country and folk influences in this band blend together so well that it creates something completely new that goes far beyond those musical styles. That alone is reason enough to see this show. Five stars!
